Students of Bangamata Sheikh Fazilatunnesa Mujib Hall of Jagannath University have declared nine female activists of Bangladesh Chhatra League as "unwanted" in an unwritten move to ban the vigilantes from entering the hall. On Saturday, their names, batch numbers and photos were flashed onto a banner dropped in front of JnU's only girls' hall.
The banner, signed "general students of Bangamata Sheikh Fazilatunnesa Mujib Hall", declared: "The Chhatra League activists who are against the July Revolution and support the genocide are declared permanently unwanted on behalf of the general students."
The nine named activists are:
- Eva Rahman - 11th batch, Psychology Department
- Swarna Patwari - 13th batch, Zoology Department
- Maitri Barai - 13th batch, Film and Television Department
- Afia Ananjum Supti - 14th batch, Bengali Department
- Nipun Islam - 13th batch, Mathematics Department
- Munia Akhter Juthi - 14th batch, Islamic Studies Department
- Rishat Ara - 14th batch, Philosophy Department
- Srija - 16th batch, Political Science Department
- Farhana Oishi - 17th batch, Institute of Education and Research
Responses from the Activists
Of the named activists, Afia Ananjum Supti commented on the declaration: "I have not been coming to the hall for 4-5 months. My graduation is completed. I will not do a Master's from Jagannath University; I will do it from outside. Declaring my hall seat unwanted is acceptable because my graduation is over. But two more girls' seats of the 17th batch are declared unwanted. The Provost and VC Sir have the sole authority to declare this. This unsolicited declaration will never be valid." She termed the move "the biggest disparity."
Anti-Discrimination Student Movement Leader Statement
The statement, such as above, was elaborated by Swarna Riya, the leader of Anti-Discrimination Student Movement, a third-year student of Public Administration Department. She said, "We could not make any official application due to the absence of a provost of the hall. These nine Chhatra League activists have been declared unwanted from the hall by the general students. Later, when the new provost joins, we will apply to cancel their seats from the student hall."
Context
This "unwanted" declaration also appears to be part of campus protests and actions taken up by students, who are probably attached to the recent movements and political changes. Students accuse the activists of being against the "July Revolution" and are calling for their exclusion from the hall so that they may live among each other peacefully and maintain the proper learning environment. No official comments have been released yet on this matter by the university administration.
