Professor Dr Mohammad Kamrul Ahsan from the Department of Philosophy has been appointed as the new VC of Jahangirnagar University. He joined the post on Thursday, with the approval of the President and Chancellor, as per Section 11(2) of Jahangirnagar University Act, 1973, on a temporary basis.
The appointment is effective from the date he assumes the post of vice-chancellor. Dr. Ahsan shall draw pay and privileges equivalent to his current assignment, along with other entitlements as per university statutes. While being a chief executive officer of JU, he must be available on the university campus at all times. The president and chancellor may revoke the appointment at will.
Prof. Kamrul Ahsan is the president of the JU unit of Nationalist Teachers' Forum. He won the hearts of the students leading the anti-quota movement in support of demonstrating students and taking part in TV talk shows echoing their demands. Besides political engagements, he is reputed as an academician and media personality.
Being appointed, Prof. Ahsan said, "I am grateful to all concerned for keeping faith in me as the vice-chancellor. One thing we have to remember is that those who were martyred had some demands on their lives. We have to rebuild the dream which the martyrs gave their blood to build a new Bangladesh. I will remember their contribution during my tenure. It is my request to students and colleagues that if there is any wrong work done by me, you will point it out and criticize logically."
His appointment comes after the resignation of former JU VC Prof. Nurul Alam, which he tendered in on August 7 citing personal and family reasons for his resignation.
